Dad was “our Google” even before it existed. Whip-smart and well-read; we would ask him questions about obscure or ancient subjects often. We did this in part out of curiosity, but mostly just for fun to test the depth of his knowledge. Alzheimer’s disease robbed his access to that vast reservoir, albeit gradually. Even after Dad forgot our names and relationship to him, his smile indicated he knew we were special in his life. This reinforced the old adage that ultimately, people don’t remember what you tell them or even show them. People do remember how you made them feel. He did, and we certainly do!
