My father used all his vacation days one year for a family summer trip to the West Coast. After inheriting his parents mobile home, he packed up his wife and children in central Illinois and for 4 1/2 weeks we toured every national park and historic monument on the route visiting friends and family along the way. It was the greatest gift we children ever received. The twins kept a daily journal in a spiral bound notebook capturing our adventures, euchre scores, dinner menus, and people we met along the way. A family treasure! Dad had completed a shortened version of this trip in college with a fraternity brother – this time, he wrote down the route. This was typical of the sacrifices my father gave for his family; always the servant.
