Patrick Oeckl, Ph.D.

Research Group Leader, German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), Ulm and Ulm University Hospital, Department of Neurology, Germany

Patrick Oeckl is a research group leader at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Ulm (DZNE) and the Ulm University Hospital, Department of Neurology. His research interest is to uncover pathophysiological mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and the discovery, validation and implementation of biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood to improve diagnosis, personalized medicine and drug development. He gained his many years of experience with mass spectrometric (MS) analyses of biomarkers in academia and industry and was among the first to successfully measure important biomarker candidates in CSF by MS such as synucleins and neurofilaments. With the development of a MS-based assay to measure the synaptic marker β-synuclein in blood, he could provide the first reliable synaptic blood marker to the scientific community thereby filling an important gap.
