Morels & Memories

Each year, a crowd gathers at Courtney Iverson’s family farm in Watertown, Minnesota, hoping to uncover the rare and prized morel mushroom—a beloved state delicacy and symbol of spring.

Courtney launched the annual “Morels and Memories” hunt in 2016 to honor her mother, Heidi Vanderlinde, who was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at 49. Inspired by Heidi’s love of the outdoors, Courtney turned her passion for foraging into a fundraiser that began with 25 friends searching the woods behind her farm. Today, more than 250 participants—some traveling from out of state—join the event each year.

Hunters compete for prizes like the first, largest, and most morels found, guided by local experts and occasional celebrity foragers. The day concludes with a chef-prepared meal, live music, and a silent auction. “It’s amazing how my world has expanded just because I tried to do something when you’re told there’s nothing you can do,” Courtney shared.

In 2025, Morels and Memories became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, allowing it to grow beyond the limitations of third-party fundraising while continuing to donate proceeds to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund. Courtney chose CureAlz for its commitment to directing 100% of general donations to research. “There’s no conflict of interest,” she said. “You know your support is helping scientists make progress toward a cure.”

When the event surpassed $100,000 raised, Heidi’s friends gathered to celebrate with Courtney—a testament to the lasting impact of Heidi’s generous spirit and the community she built. Six years after her mother’s passing, Courtney continues to honor her legacy through this beloved annual event, which marked its tenth year in May 2025.
