Director, Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine(iTERM) at Helmholtz Munich


Ali Ertürk, Ph.D., is the director of the Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine(iTERM) at Helmholtz Munich. His lab develops technologies to image large biological tissues at the cellular level including whole mouse bodies and whole human organs. Cellular views on intact biological systems provide a holistic and unbiased approach to dissect out cellular and molecular mechanisms governing the biological machinery. His general approach to science is to combine biomedical research with artificial intelligence (AI), and nanotechnology. Ertürk’s team also uses engineering to develop tools to implement our technologies directly in the medical system. Current research focuses are:

1) Neuroscience

  • Studying the role of skull-meninges connections in stroke and dementia that they recently found (Cai…Ertürk, 2019, Nature Neuroscience)
  • Mapping the human brain using SHANEL transparency (Zhao…Ertürk, 2019, bioRxiv)

2) Cancer

  • Implementing DeepMACT method to develop better cancer treatments (Pan…Ertürk, Cell, 2019)

3) Tissue Engineering

  • Generating large-scale human tissue and organs using 3D-bioprinting technologies based on the cellular maps we can generate using our DISCO and SHANEL clearing technologies
