Children of a parent with Familial Alzheimer’s disease have a 50% chance of inheriting the disease.
Familial Alzheimer’s Disease is a rare form of Alzheimer’s, accounting for only 2-3% of all Alzheimer’s cases and affecting 100,000 – 200,000 people in the United States. The early onset form of Familial Alzheimer’s disease may manifest in middle age, distinguishing it from the more typical late-onset Alzheimer’s.
Research indicates that mutations in the PS1, PS2, and/or AAP genes—which contribute to the formation of beta-amyloid plaques—may be the cause of Familial Alzheimer’s Disease. Parents diagnosed with the disease can pass this mutation on to their children, meaning the chance of their getting the disease is up to 50%. As with all other forms of Alzheimer’s, there is no known cure.
