Alfred W. Simpkins, 93, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2016 at the Eddy Village Green, Cohoes, NY. Born in Cairo, NY, he was the only child of Floyd and Olive Simpkins.
After graduating from Cairo High School and attending Syracuse University, he served in the Army from 1943-1946. Following the war, he joined the New York Telephone Company where he had a 35-year career in multiple locations. His last role was the manager of the business offices in Potsdam, Ogdensburg, and Massena, NY. He was an active volunteer with the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, the United Way, and the Methodist Church.
Upon early retirement in 1982, Al and Barbara moved to Chapel Hill, NC for 10 years before returning north to East Greenbush, NY. While in NC, he worked part-time in real estate sales.
He married Barbara Roe in 1949 and was a devoted husband for 67 years. Other survivors include his daughters, Pam Gothner (Keene, NY) and Joan Simpkins (Boston, MA) and granddaughters, Katherine Morrison (Spokane, WA) and Emma Gothner (New York, NY), who were his greatest joy. He is also survived by great-granddaughters Quinn and Riley Morrison.
He will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his thoughtfulness, and his quick wit. A sports enthusiast, he skied regularly until age 83. He also enjoyed golfing, sailing, cycling and jazz music all his adult life.
