Evelyn C. (Cortes) Sylvia

Evelyn C. (Cortes) Sylvia, 87, of Dartmouth, MA passed away on Monday, March 26, 2019, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was the wife of Anthony L. Sylvia; they had been married for 67 years.

Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of Antonio and Olivia (Medeiros) Cortes. She and her husband raised their family in Acushnet and later moved to Dartmouth. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church of Dartmouth.

In her earlier years, she was a member of the Junior Women’s Club, a volunteer at the I.H. Schwartz Center for Children, and the St. Francis Xavier Home School Association. Being an avid golfer she was a member of the Monarch Country Club in Palm City, Florida and the Country Club of New Bedford where she won the Women’s Fourball Championship in 1992 with her partner Margie Rogers.

Surviving in addition to her husband Anthony are her three children, Scott Sylvia and his wife Linda of Fairhaven, MA, Jocelyn Garlington of Marshfield, MA, Jill Pelletier and her husband Raymond of Dartmouth, MA. She had nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. James Sylvia and his wife Leigh and their son Oliver James and their daughter Violet Lucille of Pittsfield, MA. Corey Sylvia and his wife Nora of Ludlow, Vermont, Chelsea Vieira and her husband Tyler of Fairhaven, MA, Jeffrey Pelletier and his wife Nataly and their children, Hilario and Raymond Anthony of Dartmouth, MA, Matthew Pelletier and his wife Alexi of Woonsocket, RI, Michael Pelletier of Dartmouth, MA, Thomas (TJ) of Pittsfield, Ma, and Benjamin Garlington of Bourne, MA and Tracey Fischer and her husband Mark and their son Hayden Patrick of Webster, New York.

She is survived by her siblings, Robert Cortes and his wife Deborah of Port Charlotte, FL, Susan Macedo and her husband Jack of Wareham, MA, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Antonio (Tony) Cortes.

She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren for “Grammy’s Candy Store Party”. The event was held for twenty-three consecutive years and was the highlight of the Christmas season for all of the family. She enjoyed many trips to Disney with grandchildren and they affectionately nicknamed her “Goofy Grammy” after the Disney character.
