Georgia Sacclaris

On November 25, 2016, Georgia passed away of natural causes while being comforted by her two children. She was 102 years old and born Feb. 12, 1915 in Lewiston, Maine to Nicholas and Christina Karahalios.  She had a wonderful family life growing up with three siblings and loving parents. 

Georgia began a retail career at Wards Brothers Clothing Store in Lewiston before moving to New York City to work at Saks Fifth Avenue.  She met and married Peter Sacclaris in 1949, and they raised a family in Livingston, New Jersey. She continued in retail at Bloomingdale’s and then pursued employment at Livingston National Bank.  Upon retirement, she and her husband moved to Toms River, NJ.

Georgia was an active member of the St. Nicholas Church Greek Orthodox Church in Newark, NJ and of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Toms River, NJ.  She participated in the church organizations and volunteered to help with the Greek festivals.  She also belonged to local women’s organizations .

In her long and full life, Georgia embraced a very positive outlook and always looked for the good in people.  She believed that you stay young by continuing to dream.  She was a strong and determined woman who exemplified the courage and perseverance of her generation.  Known as “Jo”, Georgia touched the hearts of all who knew her and inspired family and others alike.  Her tremendous love of people was evident throughout her life, and she leaves behind a legacy of cherished and treasured memories. She enjoyed reading and liked to dance, listening to music (particularly opera), and going to parties. 

Georgia was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Sacclaris, her brother, Tony Karahalios, and her sister, Katherine Gratas.  She is survived by a younger brother, John Karahalios, a daughter, Ann Sacclaris, a son, George Sacclaris, and many nieces and nephews.
