John Miller Karns

On Thursday January 19, 2023 John Miller Karns, loving husband and father of three, grandfather of seven and great-grandfather of four died at the age of 84 in the arms of his devoted wife. John was born May 10, 1938 to John D. and Gladys M. Karns. He grew up in Des Moines, IA and attended Iowa State University where he met his future wife, Adrienne Norman. They married September 10, 1960; setting off on a 62 year love affair. John had a long and successful career as a Marketing Director at Meredith Corp.

Husband, dad, coach, fisherman, runner, friend, entrepreneur, motorcycle enthusiast, car guy, gardener, carpenter and much more describe John. John was a dedicated family man to his wife, Andy (Adrienne), and their three children (Susan, John and Jennifer). He coached baseball, softball and basketball teams. He was a Cub Scout troop leader and participated in Indian Princesses and Indian Guides. John was a creator; he was instrumental in establishing the Des Moines Youth Soccer League. He believed in volunteerism and was a commissioner on the Parks and Recreation Board and the Community Education Board along with his involvement in the school PTA and a church food bank. Through John’s love of travel and community he became a Board member and Flight Director for Friendship Force (worldwide adult exchange program) in the 70s and 80s. He could build most anything, from a garage or deck to a pinewood derby car. He even built a used motorcycle business. If you needed something, John knew where to get it. He was kind, jovial and much loved. He will be missed by all who knew him.

His funeral service will be held on February 13, 2023 at Pax Christi Catholic church in Highlands Ranch, Colorado at 11am.
