Susan “Sue” Sanders Hill, 85, of Reston, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2026. Sue was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on December 2, 1940, to Josephine S. Sanders and Donald Sanders.
Sue was endlessly creative and expressed herself through many forms of art and craft. She was a fused-glass artist, seamstress, painter, quilter, jeweler, needlepointer, teacher, and photographer. She was always making something, learning something new, or sharing her creativity with others. Above all, she was a devoted mother and grandmother and the most amazing mom and grandmother ever.
Sue’s passion in life was art. She loved teaching art, and her students loved her. She traveled the world to learn from accomplished fused-glass artists, continually expanding her knowledge and skills, and created the most magnificent pieces of art. Her curiosity led her to explore new ideas and techniques, while her caring nature made her generous with her time, knowledge, and love. Her creativity, curiosity, and love of learning were defining parts of who she was.
Sue began each day by reading the newspaper and was always ready for a spirited debate about politics. She had a strong point of view and was never afraid to share it. Her inquisitive nature and enthusiasm for life remained with her throughout her years.
She is survived by her children, David L. Hill of Chantilly, Virginia, and Lisa H. Finneran and her husband, John F. Finneran, of Lake Anna, Virginia; her grandchildren, Michael S. Finneran and his wife, Lisa M. Finneran, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and Sean R. Finneran of Herndon, Virginia; and her great-granddaughter, Luna M. Finneran.
