Dr. Fanny Elahi is an Associate Professor of Neurology, Neuroscience, and AI and Human Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she directs the Glickenhaus Center for Successful Aging and leads a research portfolio focused on developing therapeutics to slow vascular brain aging and prevent Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Dr. Elahi’s research has contributed to the understanding of vascular and immune dysfunction as interlinked, central drivers of brain aging and neurodegeneration, opening new avenues for prevention, biomarker development, and therapeutics. Her translational program integrates genetics, molecular phenotyping of brain tissue and biofluids, artificial intelligence, and stem cell modeling to move the field from descriptive associations to actionable, druggable therapeutic targets.
A recognized leader in national and international research consortia, Dr. Elahi is one of the directors of the NIA-funded Mount Sinai Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center where she oversees the development of novel molecular biomarkers for neurodegenerative disorders. Elahi also directs the Davos Alzheimer’s Collaborative sponsored program at Mount Sinai, one of eight international institutions selected to participate in the global study of blood-based Alzheimer’s biomarkers across healthcare systems. She chairs the NINDS MarkVCID Biofluid Biomarker Committee and the national biomarker committee for the NIH’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers. As past chair of the Alzheimer’s Association Vascular Cognitive Disorders workgroup, Elahi led a global network of more than 800 investigators focused on vascular drivers of Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Her research program is supported by NIH and the VA, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the Applebaum Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Rainwater Charitable Foundation. She is also the recipient of an award from Data Philanthropy to pursue brain vascular therapeutic developments for genetic causes of disease and co-leads the rejuvenation clinical trial for Mount Sinai’s XPRIZE Healthspan entry—a semifinalist for the competition’s $85 million prize.
Dr. Elahi serves on the scientific advisory boards of multiple companies and non-profit organizations in the neurodegenerative disease space, and on the editorial boards of several leading journals. The author of more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, she is the recipient of the New Vision Award for exceptionally innovative research in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Dr. Elahi completed her medical training at Mount Sinai, earned her DPhil in neurogenetics from the University of Oxford as a Medical Research Council (MRC) Scholar, and pursued residency and specialty training at UCLA and UCSF, where she established her laboratory before being recruited back to Mount Sinai. A physician and scientist in equal measure, Dr. Elahi leads a research program aimed at advancing how the field understands and treats neurodegenerative conditions, cares for individuals with neurodegenerative disease and has built Mount Sinai’s personalized brain healthspan program for early detection and prevention of dementias.
