Dr. Sarah Banks is a neuropsychologist and researcher who focuses on sex differences in Alzheimer’s disease, with an emphasis on women’s brain health. A passionate clinician, she leads the neuropsychology program of the UCSD Center for Brain Health and Memory Disorders and is an Associate Professor in Neurosciences and Psychiatry. Women comprise two thirds of all Alzheimer’s cases, with higher levels of pathology and steeper decline than men. Women have different risk factors for Alzheimer’s than men, and Dr. Banks’ work investigates how to identify these risk factors and how they might be modified. She currently uses large datasets to understand sex differences, while also co-leading the Women: Inflammation and Tau Studies with Dr. Erin Sundermann. The WITS studies are gathering data to learn about which women are vulnerable to memory loss and why. Her biggest hope is that we can figure out effective and affordable ways to improve women’s brain health at a personalized level.
