Born on November 19th, 1930 Anne was the second daughter of Louis Ellsworth Fox and Emma Helen Gitt Fox. She was raised in Wyndham Hills, York, PA with her sister Mary Fox Read. Her father owned and ran the Edward Fox Baking Company, a York commercial bakery. Anne attended school in York, PA and Toronto, Canada followed by The Pennsylvania Academy of Art through the University of Pennsylvania. There she met her husband John Freeman Hayes, an architectural student. They married April 5th 1949, settled in Radnor, PA and lived a fulfilling 64 years of marriage raising three children.
Anne took on life with a passion for all things creative. She expressed herself in many mediums including basketry, jewelry design and quilt making. Most notably, Anne was a flower arranger and ceramist. Returning to art school after raising her family, Anne earning her BFA in ceramics from the Philadelphia School for the Arts. She developed her skills turning her hobbies into a business as a professional wedding flower arranger. Utilizing her hand made vessels and creativity, she brought a vibrancy and unique flavor to all the events she worked on.
Anne had been a long time active member of the Old Eagle Garden Club and will be remembered as a regular exhibitor at the Philadelphia Flower show having won the Helen Hope Dechert Award more times than any other participant in the show’s history. Her participation spanned over 30 years.
Anne lived life to its fullest. Devoted to her husband and children and immersed in her creativity, she was able to embrace the joy derived from all her efforts. Anne lived out her last five years inflicted with the steady progression of Alzheimer’s yet never lost her joy for life. She will be missed by all those she loved. Anne is survived by her husband John Freeman Hayes, her children John, Tom & Nancy as well as seven grandchildren.
