John P. Haran, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. John P. Haran is a Professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Microbiology at UMass Chan Medical School. He is Director of Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Clinical Director for the Program in Microbiome Dynamics at UMass Chan Medical School. He earned his B.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1999 and completed his M.D. at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School in 2007. He then went on to complete his residency training in Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University in 2011. Following training he was recruited to the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Group where he has been since 2011. He also completed his Doctorate in Biomedical Sciences at University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School in 2018.

Dr. Haran was one of the founding members of the Program in Microbiome Dynamics and has served as the Clinical Director for the Program as well as for the Center for Microbiome Research since 2018. He has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of the microbiome, ED outcomes, and aging related topics. He has served on national and international scientific leadership boards in Emergency Medicine and Geriatrics and has maintained continuous NIH funding since 2017. The centerpiece of Dr. Haran’s lab focus is the microbiome-gut-brain axis and cognitive function in older adults especially those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
