Thomas W. McAllister, M.D., is the Albert Eugene Sterne Professor of Psychiatry at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and was Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at IUSM from 2013 to 2021. Prior to that, he was Millenium Professor of Psychiatry, Vice-chair for Neuroscience Research, and Director of the Section of Neuropsychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School. Dr. McAllister has been working in the field of brain injury recovery for over 30 years. He has written widely on the neuropsychiatric sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and is the co-editor of the Textbook of Traumatic Brain Injury, published by the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. McAllister has been the principal investigator of numerous federal grants focused on the neurobehavioral sequelae of TBI, the biomechanical basis of concussion, and the effects of concussion on brain structure and function in contact sport athletes and military personnel. He is one of the four Principal Investigators of the NCAA and U.S. Department of Defense-funded Concussion Assessment, Research, and Education (CARE) Consortium and leads the Administrative and Operations Core for that initiative.
