Dr. Germán Barrionuevo, Professor Emeritus of Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh, passed away at the age of 78, on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, after a long and quiet battle with Alzheimer’s disease, the very condition he dedicated his life to understanding and helping to defeat. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Barrionuevo devoted his life to the study of memory and learning. His pioneering work in synaptic plasticity advanced the scientific understanding of how memories are formed, stored, and retrieved. A meticulous researcher and dedicated mentor, he made significant contributions to neuroscience over the course of a decades-long academic career. True to his nature, Dr. Barrionuevo preferred to let his work speak for itself. He lived with humility, driven not by accolades but by an unrelenting curiosity about the brain and a desire to improve lives through science. He was also, to those who knew him best, a quiet thinker, a steadfast presence, and perhaps unexpectedly a passionate Star Trek fan. A Trekker to the core, he found joy and kinship in its message of exploration, reason, and the boundless potential of knowledge.
