Fanny Herisson, M.D., Ph.D.

Instructor in Neurology, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School

Dr. Fanny Herisson was trained in France as a neurologist and a scientist at Biology and Health doctoral school, Nantes and Sorbonne University, Paris.  Her initial work focused on clinical research (stroke diagnosis blood markers) and as well as brain protective therapies in the context of acute cerebral injury.

During her post-doctoral tenure at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School, she has first applied her deep understanding of stroke pathophysiology to develop novel technologies (low field transportable MRI for acute stroke diagnosis) and new rodent models of acute reversible cerebral edema. For the past years her work focused on the immune system. She demonstrated the interactions between the brain and the bone marrow, leading to publications in Circulation Research and Nature Neuroscience. Notably, she designed and implemented new techniques to show how cells are preferentially and directly recruited from the skull marrow to the brain through micro-channels after cerebral injury.

Dr Herisson was appointed Instructor in Neurology in 2019 within the Genetics and Aging Research Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, in the laboratory of Dr Tanzi. She will move forward in investigating the interactions between the brain and the immune cells originating from the bone marrow in the context of Alzheimer’s disease.
